Finally, there is a consolidated Magic Quadrant focussed on NPMD. Industry has been looking for this for several years – evolving from the Applications Performance Monitoring Magic Quadrant (limited in scope), this analysis encompasses a lot more of the concerns that network operations are concerned with… Interesting read, and interesting participants/exclusions!! Check it out! http://www.gartner.com/technology/reprints.do?id=1-1RP8ZUP&ct=140311&st=sb&utm_source=socialmedia&utm_medium=&utm_term=Magic_Quadrant_NPMD&utm_content=press_release&utm_campaign=Corporate2014
We have been watching this space – and in particular Riverbed – for the past several years. When they announced their plans about four years ago to get into this market, few understood what they were trying to achieve, how it complimented the product offering, or how they were going to execute. Following a few successful acquisitions and heavy integration efforts, the program is coming together nicely. Good on Riverbed! The exclusion on the list are interesting – some for seemingly simplistic rationale… but I guess Gartner had to draw the line somewhere. Good to see the influencers were included and why they did not make the grade.

Expanded IDS facilities
With recent staff expansion and increased business, IDS and landlord Alekona Ventures have reached an agreement to expand the current facility at 232 Herzberg Road to accommodate a newly renovated 4,500 sq. ft. office area. Located at 232 Herzberg Road in Kanata, IDS will be a major tenant of the facility. This represents an expansion of more than double the original space. The plan will include dedicated space for its Service Desk, supporting the IDS ServiceGuard and IDS DataGuard product lines, as well as areas for sales, a new corporate boardroom, lab and dedicated seating for existing and planned future expansion of its service delivery team. Says Randy Peckham, President of IDS, “ This expanded facility is critical to our growth plan, and we are excited that Alekona Ventures wanted to be a part of that. With great proximity to clients and suppliers, this location will give us a fabulous opportunity to meet clients demands.”

According to Hu Yoshida, VP and CTO at Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) the recent floods in Thailand affected about 40% of disk manufacturing. The supply shortage adversely affected revenue of PC and server manufacturers. For example, 8TB disks that were $79 jumped to $189 in a matter of weeks. They expect the supply line to come back by third quarter 2012.
“Even if they come back, the price increase will exist for some time,” said Yoshida. “This is life altering. For the last 50 years we’ve had decreasing prices, and the price of that capacity was declining 30% a year. As a result of Moore’s law, the capacity was doubling every 18 months, and price of that capacity was eroding 30% per year.”
That constant price erosion got all of us in IT used to the idea that after five yeas it was cheaper to buy new than to maintain old. Now we’ve seen an increase, which will change things forever.
The estimated cost of rebuilding factories in Thailand is about a billion dollars. That cost must be recovered over some period. To recover a billion dollars when disks are so cheap will take some time.
Other factors are also affecting the cost of manufacturing drives. Perpendicular recording is the next step, after the longitudinal recording technology currently in use.
